Doris Included in Ireland Team But McCarthy Misses Out

Ireland rugby squad selection news

Returning manager Andy Farrell has named skipper Doris in his Irish squad for the fall matches, but Joe McCarthy misses out.

Doris, who has not played since having a shoulder operation in the start of May, recently returned to provincial training, but it remains unclear if he will be ready to play against the All Blacks in Chicago on 1 November.

Lock Joe McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot injury he sustained during the opening Lions Test against the Wallabies in the summer.

Ulster player Izuchukwu and southern province wing Calvin Nash are also absent due to fitness concerns, and number 15 Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing a hip operation following the Lions tour.

Leinster forward Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the only uncapped player in the 34-man squad, but Irish rugby authorities states uncapped Munster pair Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and previously capped western province winger Bolton will head to the US as "reserves".

After facing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their 2016 encounter, the team host Japan, the Wallabies and world champions South Africa in Dublin.

"It's an exciting group to the panel and it's a chance for the more experienced players and for those who made their debuts on the recent tour to the Lelos and Portugal," commented the coach, who returns to national team duties after a break to lead the Lions tour to the southern hemisphere.

In a largely familiar-looking squad, Leinster's Prendergast and the southern club's Jack Crowley will once again compete for the starting number 10 position. The number 10 jersey is remains up for grabs, with the two players set to face off for the first time in Saturday's URC match at the Dublin venue.

Frawley is the third fly-half chosen as the coach opting against selecting Leinster's Byrne.

At scrum-half, Farrell has picked Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Casey, who captained Ireland to the summer international wins over the Lelos and Portugal. There is also a recall for Connacht's Blade, who is preferred to teammate Ben Murphy.

Robbie Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an veteran group of centre choices. Jamie Osborne is another option in the midfield, though the youngster is additionally a leading candidate to deputise for the full-back at full-back.

Outside backs James Lowe, Mack Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are included. O'Brien shone on his national team debut over the summer with a brace each in the victories over the Lelos and Portugal.

McCarthy is the sole new addition in the Ireland pack. The loose-head prop has been in two of Leinster's three league matches so far and featured in the second string's loss by England in Bristol earlier this year.

McCarthy was included in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer selection, but did not earn a international appearance.

Southern province second row Thomas Ahern, who earned his debut appearances in those Tests, is kept in the squad, while veteran Northern province second row Iain Henderson is back after missing the summer tour.

Jack Conan, who started all three Lions Tests during the tour, is set to cover for Doris if the skipper fails to recover fitness soon enough to face the All Blacks.

The national team will meet in the capital on the start of the week before traveling to Chicago on the following day.
